Hermeneutical Problems With Christian Authors

I listen to many podcasts.  One of them from Reformed Media Review (RMR) at Reformed Forum was a critique of the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan.  Chan has been on the platform with John Piper and some other reformed men.

The critique is gracious, but firm in it's assertions that some men shouldn't write books, and few should be teachers.  The main point of the critique at RMR is that Chan seems to imply that the kind of "crazy love" that a person should produce is self-produced love, not a love manisfested as an overflow of the work of the Spirit and Word in our lives.

The reviewer is concerned that Chan has a faulty hermeneutical point of view that leads to some troubling conclusions. "Indicatives need to be the foundation of the imperatives."

Check out the review, the discussion is good to hear in order to see how our foundational hermeneutic affects all that we do and say.

Your posting caught my eye because of the reference to Chan's book "Crazy Love". Listening to Air One "Christian" radio the other day I heard a song by the artist Hawk Nelson titled Crazy Love. After googling them it appears that the song was inspired by the book. Interesting comment you had about self-produced love. I doubt that many people who listen to the song or read Chan's book, even contemplate with deep interest the important point that you bring up. Keep up the good work.
